Today, consumers, traders, roasters and others in the coffee supply chain are becoming more and more interested not only in handling, making or drinking the good and precious cup but also in knowing where it was produced, how and the people behind it. Kenyan coffee is produced by two sectors, the plantation sector with over 40,000ha and the small-holder sector with over 120,000ha of coffee. The plantation sector is divided into small and medium estates with 4 -25 hectare farms and large plantations with 25+ hectares. The small holder sector is made up of 270 Farmers Co-operatives Societies (FCS). Each Co-operative can serve more than 2000 small holders with single to several factories. Smallholder farmers produce 60% of the country’s crop today and are recognized for producing the highest quality as they are able to provide attention to each tree.
